(ATR) Preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing get attention from IOC vice president Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr.
Samaranch is the chair of the IOC Coordination Commission, leading the group officially since last year when predecessor Alexander Zhukov left the IOC.
Samaranch, an IOC member since 2001, has been involved with previous coordination commissions and currently serves on the board for the Olympic Channel.
Not just because his father was an IOC president, Samaranch has been talked about as a possibility for that office. The drawback for him will be age. Current IOC president Thomas Bach could be in office until 2025; Samaranch faces age 70 retirement just four years later. Nonetheless, Samaranch will be a significant part of the IOC leadership for some years to come.
The Around the Rings Golden 25 is the annual survey of individuals who will have the most influence for the Olympic Movement in the year ahead. First published in 1997, this is the 22nd edition.
