(ATR) As Berlin prepareto unveil its 2024 Olympics concept, the DOSB, Germany's Olympic committe, tells Around the Rings there’s no certainty Germany will submit a bid.
On Tuesday, Berlin’s mayor confirmed the city would publicize its bid plan next Monday, with a referendum on the Olympics to follow to gauge the level of public support.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has received responses to a questionnaire on Berlin’s plans. But with Hamburg also vying to be Germany’s Olympic candidate city, some tough decisions lie ahead for DOSB officials.
"One thing is for sure right now – we want to bring back the Olympic Games to Germany," spokesman Christian Klaue told ATR.
"What has not been decided yet is for which year we bid [2024 or 2028] and with which city," he added.
"It could also be a decision not to bid for 2024. It is all open."
At a Sept. 11 board meeting, DOSB officials will discuss the merits of the two bids and the procedure for deciding which, if any, should be put forward as Germany's candidate for the 2024 Games.
Last week, IOC president Thomas Bach said an Olympic bid from his home country "would really have a good chance".
"A German bid, supported by a vast majority of the population, would be a very, very strong one," Bach was quoted by the German DPA news agency at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing.
Munich suffered a humiliating blow when it picked up just 25 votes in the ballot for the 2018 Winter Games won by PyeongChang. And last November, voters rejected a bid for the 2022 Olympics in a referendum in the Bavarian city.
The IOC launches the bidding contest for the 2024 Summer Games next year.
Istanbul, Paris, Rome and a U.S. city are among several possible candidates in the bid race for the 2024 Games. The host city will be chosen in 2017.
