(ATR)French Polynesia is one of five potential venues to host the surfing competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Given the vast distance between the South Pacific and France, it is much more likely that one of the other four bidders located within the borders of the 2024 host country will be the eventual winner.
The other venues - Biarritz, the community of municipalities of Le Pays Bigouden Sud (la Torche), the Department of Les Landes (Hossegor, Capbreton and Seignosse), and Lacanau/Bordeaux Metropole - are all on the Atlantic coast of France.
Paris 2024 will be visiting all five candidate venues this summer to get a clear indication of what weather and sea conditions to expect in the summer of 2024.
The key criteria identified by Paris 2024 will include the venue’s experience in hosting surfing competitions, weather conditions, the quality of the body of water, and facilities for hosting athletes and spectators.
The sites have a deadline of September 30 to submit a complete application file.
A decision is expected in the first half of 2020, though it will be contingent on the IOC giving final approval in December 2020 for surfing to be included in the 2024 Games.
FIS, Sina Sports Sign MoU
The International Ski Federation (FIS) and Chinese online platform Sina Sports are joining forces to promote snow sports in China.
FIS President Gian Franco Kasper and Secretary General Sarah Lewis signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday alongside Sam Li, head of International Business Strategy for Sina Sports, at Genting Secret Garden in Chongli, an official venue of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
The strategic partnership includes FIS officially endorsing the Sina Alpine Ski Cup mass participation skiing competition series in China; the promotion of FIS’s grass roots beginners program Get Into Snow Sports China (GISS); and the installation of a FIS destination on Weibo, one of the biggest social media platforms in China, which will feature coverage of FIS events and promote FIS activities in China such as Get Into Snow Sports.
As part of the MoU between FIS and Sina Sports, the GISS-China program and courses will also be promoted and activated with the Sina Alpine Ski Cup event.
Lewis said that the partnership is "another important contribution to the promotion of skiing and snow sports in China".
"Sina Sports has a tremendous media reach and a proven track record through the sports events that they have already developed with 3x3 basketball and futsal," she added.
UCI Asks Public to Comment on Road Cycling
More than 22,300 people offer their opinions on the current state of road cycling and what they want to see in terms of the discipline’s future development.
Residents of 134 countries on five continents took part in the public consultation from July 10 to July 16, organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
It’s part of a process launched by the UCI aimed at improving road cycling.
The cycling federation says the public consultation covered topics that "may - or may not - make road cycling even more exciting". Among the possible changes are the use of earpieces by teams and their riders, the in-competition use of power meters, team sizes and budgets, event formats, the broadcasting of events, and the provision of on-screen data during races.
"The huge number of responses received gives cause for satisfaction and provides an excellent foundation which we can build on, together with all stakeholders, to make road cycling even more interesting and popular," UCI President David Lappartient said in a statement.
The UCI says the consultation process will continue with a series of interviews with people from cycling’s various extended families and with discussions within an ad hoc working group consisting of representatives from road cycling teams, riders, organizers, media groups, and broadcasters.
A series of proposals will then be drawn up and put before the Professional Cycling Council and the UCI Management Committee for their approval in 2020.
