(ATR) Some 60 French sporting champions are coming out in support of centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron ahead of the second round of the country’s presidential election.
The athletes, both active and retired, include Olympic champions Yannick Agnel, Lucie Decosse, David Douillet and Laura Flessel, according to the website francsjeux.com.
They signed an appeal calling for voters to choose Macron rather than far-right politician Marine Le Pen this Sunday.
The group says it is backing Macron because "We want to continue to be proud to represent our country. The France of human rights and the citizen must continue to radiate in the world. That is why, in these tormented and undecided times, we are calling to vote for the only candidate who follows the republican tradition of our country: Emmanuel Macron."
Denis Masseglia, the president of the National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF), was among those who signed on, though he did so as an individual and not as a representative of the CNOSF.
The newly-elected French president, whether it’s Macron or Le Pen, should be on hand to welcome the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2024 Olympics to Paris. The commission will be in the French capital from May 14-16, arriving just seven days after the election and just two days after the commission visits Los Angeles, the other city in the contest.
