A 78 ans, Dick Pound n’est pas seulement le doyen des membres du CIO. L’ancien nageur et avocat canadien passe également pour le dirigeant olympique le plus libre dans ses propos. A la différence de la majorité de ses pairs, il ne cultive aucun goût pour la langue de bois. Il parle. Il ne craint pas les remous.

Sa dernière sortie médiatique soulève un débat jusque-là abordé avec un luxe de précautions par le CIO et les instances du mouvement olympique. Il touche à la vaccination des athlètes. Avec une question : les olympiens des Jeux de Tokyo doivent-ils être considérés comme prioritaires ?

En novembre dernier, Thomas Bach a répondu par la négative. Le président du CIO a profité de son voyage à Tokyo, le premier depuis le début de la crise sanitaire, pour suggérer que les athlètes ne devraient pas passer en tête de liste dans le processus de vaccination. Les médecins et le personnel soignant doivent être prioritaires, a tranché Thomas Bach.
