(ATR) All four of the cities in the race for the 2024 Summer Olympics make the latest IOC filing deadline.
That includes Rome, which appears to be in a precarious position with the failure of Mayor Virginia Raggi to support the bid. In a statement the IOC acknowledges the situation.
"The IOC is aware of the situation in Rome and is still in contact with the National Olympic Committee (CONI) and the Candidature Committee Rome 2024 to hear about their position following the decision of the City Council," says the IOC.
The Rome city council backed the mayor’s decision two weeks ago.
Leaders of the Rome bid are holding out the hope that they can keep the bid alive without the mayor – or that she can be convinced to change her mind.
Along with Rome, Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris submitted the second of the three filings required by the IOC due this week.
The document is supposed to spell out governance of the organizing committee proposed by each bid as well as government guarantees, which in Rome’s case will be minus a statement from the city.
Each of the bids has already paid the second installment of the IOC filing fee, $50,000. The final filing, due in February will require a $150,000 payment for a total of $250,000.
The IOC will vote on the 2024 host city Sep. 13, 2017 at the IOC Session in Lima.
