(ATR) The Faroe Islands is campaigning to get its athletes to compete in the Olympics under the Faroese flag.

The Faroes, a self-governing region of Denmark, is a founding member of the International Paralympic Committee and are recognized by eight international sporting federations. But a Faroese athlete can currently only participate in the Olympics under the Danish flag.

There is no doubt the Faroes are a sports-minded people, with 18,000 of the 50,000 population belonging to sports clubs.

It has been more than 40 years since the Faroes first attempted to get into the Olympics and the latest push began earlier this year.

As part of the campaign, the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee (FCSOC) invited a select group of international journalists for a visit last month. Around the Rings content editor Gerard Farek was one of them.
