(ATR) The Olympic Museum in Lausanne is reported to be the target of a long-running embezzlement scheme that may have nabbed nearly $2 million.

Olympics writer Alan Abrahamson reports on his 3 Wire Sports website that the IOC Director of Administration Thierry Sprunger has resigned and that the former director of the museum boutique may be in police custody.

Three people who had oversight for the finances of the museum are reported to have been fired.

Sprunger, who resigned this week, is not accused of wrong-doing. He has worked at the IOC since 1994.

The scheme Abrahamson reports may have involved fake invoices and credit card charges, carried out since the 1990’s.

So far, no official comment from the IOC as to the status of its investigation or actions that have been taken.

News of the scandal comes as the IOC Executive Board prepares to hold a regularly scheduled meeting next week.

The alleged embezzlement is reported to have been uncovered after discrepancies in the accounts of the museum gift shop were spotted by IOC chief of staff Christophe De Kepper in September.

The museum, open since 1992, will close for a two-year renovation at the end of January.
