(ATR) Elections in July for five seats on the IOC Executive Board will mean some new faces at the top, possibly one from the U.S.

Two vice presidential seats are up for grabs. One is held by Zaiqing Yu of China, who steps down after eight years on the EB. Nawal El Moutawakel, whose term as a regular EB member ends this year, will seek the vice presidency.

The second vice presidential slot is open following the resignation of Italy’s Mario Pescante. Craig Reedie, currently serving as an EB member, tells Around the Rings he will run for Pescante’s seat.

Both Reedie and Moutawakel, from Morocco, are not expected to draw opposition.

Their stepping up to vice presidency will mean campaigns for three EB seats. In addition for those two seats, Richard Carrion of Puerto Rico will leave the board after two consecutive terms.

Candidates for those seats are expected to include Sergei Bubka of Ukraine, Spain’s Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., Willy Kaltschmitt from Guatemala and Nat Indrapana of Thailand.

Anita DeFrantz, senior IOC member in the U.S. is also considering a run for the EB. She served two terms from 1992 to 2001.

Four other seats on the EB will be subject to ratification at the IOC Session in July, but they are earmarked for specific groups and should draw one candidate each.

C.K. Wu is the nominee of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations to replace Denis Oswald.

Rene Fasel is to be reelected as the representative of the Association of Winter Olympic International Federations.

Patrick Hickey of Ireland, president of the European Olympic Committees, is nominated for the seat vacated by Mario Vazquez Rana that is earmarked for the Association of National Olympic Committees.

Frank Fredericks, in his last year as chair of the IOC Athletes Commission, will eventually be replaced on the EB by his successor, to be chosen by the commission later this year.

The elections will take place July 26 on the final day of the IOC Session in London.
