(ATR) Olympic organizers say the newly installed Olympic Rings on Copacabana Beach will bring the spirit of the Olympic Games to the public.
The Rings were installed today with 15 days to go until the Olympic Opening Ceremony, and were made out of 65 kilograms of recycled plastic. It is the second location in Rio de Janeiro to receive a set of Rings, after Parque Madureira received a set a year ago that were previously displayed in Newcastle, United Kingdom ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
Municipal Olympic Company (EOM) Vice-President Ricardo Leyser told Around the Rings that he thinks the Copacabana Rings will be the location "with the most selfies taken in the world," given that it is the most famous beach in Brazil.
"In the park you need a ticket, here everybody can come; here I expect millions of selfies," Leyser added. "Copacabana is where the Cariocas run, play beach volleyball, and it is very important for the sport life of the city. [The rings being here] show Cariocas love sports and Copacabana is the most important spot for all this."
EOM President Joaquim Monteiro told reporters that the rings represent a "grand mark," like the "Cidade Olimpica" hashtags that have appeared around the city in the run up to the Games. He added that they chose to construct the rings out of recycled plastic to highlight the sustainable aspects of the Olympic Games being held in Rio.
"I hope that all different kinds of people, athletes, journalists, tourists, and cariocas, come to take pictures here," Monteiro said.
