(ATR) A former athlete and chef de mission for the Italian Olympic team will serve as the new secretary general for his country’s Olympic committee.

The Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) said in a statement Carlo Mornati is the committee’s new secretary general, replacing Roberto Fabbricini.

Mornati served as chef de mission for the Italian Olympic team at the Sochi, Rio de Janeiro, and PyeongChang Olympics. Before leading the Italian team he was an athlete competing in four Olympics in rowing. Mornati won a silver medal in the coxless-four competition at the Sydney 2000 Games. In addition, he won six world championship medals during his career.

After retiring as an athlete Mornati continued to work in a number of capacities for CONI.

From 2005-09 he served on the body’s National Executive before joining the Olympics Preparation Office. According to a release he has been Deputy to the Secretary General since 2013 assuming the role of being "responsible for Olympic Preparation activities and all General Secretariat Activities".

The next year will be a big one for CONI as the body is organizing the 2019 IOC Session in Milan. The last non-Olympic year IOC Session in Italy was in 1982 in Rome.

In addition to his new CONI role, Mornati will continue to serve on the Executive Management and Steering Committees for the Cortina 2021 foundation, ahead of the 2021 World Alpine Skiing Championships.
