(ATR) The president of AIBA says he won’t stay around "too long" and some IOC members might get an age limit extension.
C.K. Wu, IOC member from Chinese Taipei and president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), is poised to win re-election to a third term as president on Friday. To run for AIBA president, candidates need 20 national federations’ nominations. Wu has 98.
While Wu says he is honored to have the near-unanimous support of the federations, he would not say this would be his final term.
"I will not hang on too long," was the strongest assurance Wu would offer.
The number one factor he told Around the Rings on Wednesday in evaluating how long he would remain as AIBA’s top official is his health.
"I have to be very healthy and fit," said Wu, 68. He also said he would step down if his ideas had been successfully implemented and "boxing is on the right track."
An IOC member since 1988, Wu said the retirement age for IOC members will stay at 70. However, international federation and national Olympic committee presidents "should stay until 74."
Wu said the most pressing issue for the IOC is a "strong IOC to lead the Olympic Games."
Changes to the Olympic Games bid process and how sports are selected for the Olympic Program are also critical, Wu added.
Another potential change to the IOC is the splitting of the Culture & Education Program. The creation of a new commission would mean Olympic culture "will be emphasized more."
To emphasize Olympic culture, Wu said cultural competitions might be tied to an Olympic Games host city.
