(ATR) The city of Paris is rolling out the ninth edition of its Women in Sport event on Saturday, the same day the IOC 2024 Evaluation Commission arrives in the French capital.
The event features 2500 Parisian women taking part in some 20 sports free of charge, including zumba, rollerblading, running, boxing, fitness, football and handball, according to the city government.
This year, it will be intertwined with the Paris 2024 bid through sports like wrestling and golf. Paris plays host to the World Wrestling Championships this summer and the Ryder Cup in 2018.
The operation, run by the city of Paris under the direction of 100 sports specialists, is an effort to promote women’s sport. It will be held at six sites on Parisian public space throughout the city.
The deputy mayor of Paris in charge of sports, Jean-François Martins, said in a statement the festival combines "a strong demand for women to be able to freely participate in sport on the streets and our desire to reclaim the public space for leisure and sport ".
The 13-member IOC delegation led by FIBA secretary general Patrick Baumann will arrive in Paris on Saturday from Los Angeles and begin a three-day inspection of the city’s Olympic plans on Sunday.
Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron will reportedly meet the delegation on Sunday evening immediately after his inauguration ceremony.
Paris and Los Angeles are the only two contenders remaining in the 2024 Summer Olympic bid race. The IOC Evaluation Commission will provide a detailed report of their inspection of each city to the remaining IOC members at the 2024 Candidate City Briefing in Lausanne from July 11-12.
The IOC will choose the host of the 2024 Olympics at its Session in Lima, Peru on Sep. 13.
