(ATR) TOP Sponsor Dow Inc. suspends operations as some 10,000 people in Midland, Michigan are evacuated.
Two dams failed along the Tittabawassee River on Tuesday, sending as much as nine feet (three meters) of floodwater into the town.
In a statement on Facebook, Dow said it was enacting the company’s flood preparation plan and "only essential Dow staff needed to monitor the situation and manage any issues as a result of the flooding remain on site." In addition to Dow Inc.’s global headquarters, the company hasplants in Midland and all could be in peril due to flooding.
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer said at a press conference late Tuesday night: "In the next 12 to 15 hours, downtown Midland could be under nine feet of water.
She added: "to go through this in the midst of a global pandemic is almost unthinkable."
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning that extends until May 20, warning residents of "catastrophic dam failure".
"This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION" the NWS warning said. "SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW."
