(ATR) Organizers of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina laid the cornerstone of the Youth Olympic Village on May 6.
The village is set to house more than 3,800 youth athletes when the third Summer Youth Olympics begin in October 2018. Organizers will seek to improve upon the previous Summer Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing, China in 2014.
Buenos Aires 2018 organizers (BAYOGOC) used a 3D printer and material from recycled plastic bottles to create the cornerstone of the village, emphasizing the focus on staging a sustainable Youth Olympics.
"Through this initiative, we are honoring our working principles of innovation and sustainability," said BAYOGOC chief executive officer Leandro Larrosa. "We involved the community in every step of the process, making them a key part of the project and promoting respect for the environment."
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by more than 700 people including Olympic athletes, members of the Argentine Olympic Committee, organizers, community members and leaders of the national and local government. The cornerstone was unveiled by President of Argentina Mauricio Macri, Argentine Olympic Committee president and IOC member Gerardo Werthein and Buenos Aires Mayor Horacio Larreta.
Children participated in sports such as rugby, athletics and hockey in a small preview of what Mayor Larreta called "one of the most inspiring projects we have nowadays in our city and our country."
