A full contingent of eight executives and eight observers are travelling from the candidate city of Budapest to take part in the Rio Observer Program.
Just 4 days remain to the welcome event on 4th August, when the 17-day agenda begins. The aim of the Observer Program is to allow candidates to improve their bid plans on the back of real-life and contemporary Games experiences.
The Budapest delegation will be led by Balázs Fürjes, Chairman of the Bid. Fürjes and his team aim to tap into a rich mine of knowledge at Rio. Over the course of the Games, the Budapest team will have the opportunity to attend numerous behind-the-scenes desktops, visits and briefings covering a range of key Games-time operations such as city operations, technology, utilities and energy, and sustainability and legacy.
"This is a once-only opportunity," Fürjes said, "and we intend to make the absolute most of it. We are here to live and breathe the Games, to experience first hand the gritty hard work, the mountainous challenges, and those small and large triumphs and achievements that sometimes never make it to the front page. Every piece of information and word of advice we take away from Rio will be integrated into our plans."
The Budapest delegation also hopes to accumulate useful tips and pointers from upcoming Games hosts PyeongChang, Tokyo and Beijing, who are all at different stages in their preparations. The Official Debriefbetween the IOC, the past Games Host, current OCOGs and Candidate Cities is a further opportunity to hear from subject matter experts on how best practice can be applied in real-world conditions.
