Ramsamy Talks Up SA 2024

IOC member Sam Ramsamy tells Around the Rings that South Africa continues to weigh possible bids for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2024 Olympics.

"Everybody is urging us to bid," he told ATR.

"We have to present a positive image, so we are certainly thinking about it."

"We are waiting for national elections next April and then we will think about it more," he added.

Durban, which staged the 2011 IOC Session, would remain favorite to be chosen as the Olympic bidding city.

For the Commonwealth Games, Ramsamy said a city selection process would be necessary if the government and South African Olympic committee decide to go ahead with a bid.

Baku, Doha, Paris and a bid from Russia have been mentioned as possible applicants for the 2024 Olympics.

Bach on Germany’s Olympic Ambitions

IOC vice president Thomas Bach tells ATR that Germany will bide its time in deciding whether to bid for the summer or winter Olympics.

"We are waiting for the decision on 2020 and elections [federal and state] in September," he said.

"We are happy to note that there is a great support for an Olympic Games in Germany."

Munich’s 2018 failure – the bid garnered just 25 votes at the Durban IOC Session – remains fresh in the memory for Germany’s Olympic chiefs.
