(ATR) The Russian Boxing Federation confirms the postponement of the new AIBA World Cup originally scheduled for November 2020.
In response to an email from Around the Rings, an RBF spokesperson reported that "the Boxing World Cup will take place in 2021 and is scheduled for March."
The RBF representative added that the competition "should not coincide with the Olympic qualifiers to be held in February".
While the Olympic qualifying event for Europe is scheduled for London in February, the one for the Americas does conflict with the new World Cup date since it is set to take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina in March. A final world qualifier is slated for Paris in May. The three tournaments were postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
2021 could go down in history as the year with the most loaded international sports calendar in history, only emulated with 2022.
In July it will be the Olympic boxing tournament at the postponed Tokyo Games followed by the AIBA Men's World Championship, which was stripped from India and given to Serbia to organize.
The date of the World Cup in Serbia in the second half of 2021 has yet to be determined.
The new Boxing World Cup, based in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, was first announced in January this year by RBF Secretary General Umar Kremlev during an AIBA Forum held in Panama.
The tournament would have more than $1 million in prize money and include 16 teams from around the world.
Apparently it would be a variation of the semi-professional World Series of Boxing organized by AIBA from 2011 to 2018.
The AIBA Congress planned for December this year, originally in Budapest although it could also be online, will have to decide the dates of its next competitions and above all send an important signal that the federation wants to regain its recognition from the IOC.
