2014 Asian Games Begin This Week -- Monday Memo

(ATR) The 2014 Asian Games begin in Incheon, South Korea on Sept. 19.

This is the largest sporting event staged in Asia, hosted by the Olympic Council of Asia, with a program set to feature over 430 events across 36 disciplines.

Hockey events will serve as qualifiers for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

On Sept. 20, during the 17th Asiad, the OCA is expected to announce the host city for the next Asian Games.

Hanoi, Vietnam was originally selected to host the 2019 Games. In April 2014, the Vietnamese government announced its withdrawal from hosting the Asiad.

Jakarta, Indonesia and Manila, capital city of the Philippines, are now in the running to host the Games. If chosen by the OCA, Jakarta would host the Asian Games in 2018. The Philippines, if selected, would host the Games in 2019.

World Summit on Ethics in Sports

The World Summit on Ethics in Sports is taking place Friday, Sept. 19 at FIFA headquarters in Zurich.

Speakers will include Olympic swimmer Gustavo Borges; Olympic gymnast Miroslav Cerar; 15-time Paralympic gold medal winner Heinz Frei; Michael Garcia,chairman of the investigatory chamber of FIFA's independent Ethics Committee; and Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad al-Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee.

ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships

McHenry, Maryland is hosting the 2014 Canoe Slalom World ChampionshipsSept. 17 through Sept. 21.

The International Canoe Federation says over 400 athletes from 46 different countries will gather in McHenry for the world championships. This is the city's second time hosting the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships.

ISAF World Championships

The 2014 Sailing World Championships are underway in Santander, Spain.

The International Sailing Federation says over 1,400 sailors and more than 1,000 boats representing 80 countries are gathered at the event.The World Championships, which end Sept. 21, serve as a qualifying event for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

FIVB Men's World Championship

Poland is currently staging the 2014 men's Volleyball World Championships.

Matches are taking place across seven cities in Poland including Katowice, Krakow, Warsaw, and Wroclaw. Competition concludes Sept. 21.

Shooting World Championships

The 2014 Shooting World Championships are underway in Granada, Spain.

The 51st edition of the International Shooting Sport Federation's World Championships, which end on Sept. 20, are acting as a qualifier for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

UCI Road World Championships

The Internaitonal Cycling Union is staging the 2014 Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain Sept. 21 to Sept. 28.The Road World Championships consists of 12 events.

This marks the seventh time that Spain will host the championships. Lasarte hosted the event in 1965, Montjuic in 1973, Barcelona in 1984, Benidorm in 1992, San Sebastian in 1997, and Madrid in 2005.

Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships

Izmir, Turkey is hosting the 2014 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships Sept. 21 through Sept. 28.

The International Gymnastics Federation saysover 300 of the world's top rhythmic gymnasts, including seven 2012 Olympians, will gather in Izmir for the world championships.

IJF KATA World Championships

The International Judo Federation kicks off the 2014 KATA World Championships in Malaga, Spain on Sept. 20.

Competition concludes Sept. 21.

Copa America Femenina

The 2014 Copa America Femenina, South America's biggest football tournament for women, is underway in Ecuador.

The seventh edition of theCopa America Femenina will act as aqualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.The tournament ends Sept. 28.
