Russia Offering Subsidies for World Cup Construction

(ATR) The Russian government has approved a set of rules on subsidizing construction for World Cup 2018 infrastructure and venues.

On Friday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed an agreement saying that the government will offer subsidies of up to $150 million to regions of Russia hosting World Cup events.

The World Cup presents a challenge to Russia, as the impoverished regions across the country will need a total overhaul of sports, transport, and security infrastructure. Although many venues are already complete or on schedule, several others are being built from scratch.

Officials have estimated that Russia will need $20 billion to prepare for the World Cup with the bill evenly split between private investors and regional governments.
