Only a handful of teams remain undefeated at the World Mixed Curling Championship in Berne, Switzerland as the halfway point of the event’s round robin is reached.
Sweden, Russia, Hungary, Scotland and hosts Switzerland have all won their first four games after three days of play.
There were also a handful of countries that celebrated their first wins of the event today (Monday 14 September). The most significant of these was Spain’s victory over Canada.
The game ended 6-5, much to the delight of skip, Sergio Vez. He said: "We didn’t expect to defeat Canada. We are very proud to beat a nation like them."
Also during session nine, France and Sweden’s games both finished in six ends. France beat Belgium 11-1, while Sweden defeated Lithuania 7-3.
Norway’s game with Germany was very close and after five ends the scores were level 3-3. However, Norway secured three points in the remaining ends, to win 6-3. Denmark beat Romania 6-2 and Slovakia won against Ireland, 6-4, this morning.
Scotland continued their unbeaten run, in Group D, during the tenth session of the event taking their tally to four wins from four. They beat Belarus 12-1 in six ends.
As Scotland enjoyed this victory Austria, who are also in the Group D, celebrated their first win at this new World curling event. Austria defeated Brazil, 8-2, in seven ends.
Austrian skip Karina Toth, hopes that this win will give her team some momentum going forward. She said: "We are improving now and I’m happy we have started to win. I hope after this win that more will follow."
USA and Turkey also secured wins in Group D, in one less end than the regulation eight ends. First, USA beat Japan 7-3, while Turkey defeated Estonia 5-3.
In Group C, Czech Republic defeated England 6-3, and it took an extra end before the winner of Slovenia and New Zealand was decided. New Zealand won 6-5.
Norway beat their Scandinavian opponents, 9-6, in a game that came right down to the final stone, in session 11. Going into the last end, the Norwegians were trailing by a point.
There were also first wins for Israel and Australia. Israel defeated Wales, 10-5, while Australia beat Spain 9-6.
Australian skip, Ian Pallangio, said: "It was nice to get the first win on the board. Some big points were scored back and forth and Sergio [Vez] kept lots of rocks in play and put lots of pressure on us."
Denmark, Canada and Slovakia also won in session 11. Denmark beat France 5-2, Canada won 7-4 against Latvia and Slovakia defeated Italy 8-3 in seven ends.
In session 12, Kazakhstan and Slovenia went head-to-head both looking for their first win at the World Mixed Curling Championship 2015. After a tense game Slovenia won 6-5. England and China were also locked into a close game, which in the end China won, 4-3.
Hungary and Switzerland continue to go undefeated as the halfway stage of the round robin is reached. Hungary beat Turkey, 7-4, this evening, while Switzerland defeated Poland, 6-4.
Belarus beat Brazil, 11-0, in six ends and with one of the biggest points margins of the day and Russia won against Czech Republic, 7-5.
