These teams topped the four groups in Berne, Switzerland as round robin play drew to a close after six days of action.

Today (Thursday 17 September) Sweden, who are in Group A, beat France 9-4, during session 22, before going onto win their last game, in session 24, against Romania, 10-1 in six ends.

Germany, in Group B, had just one game today, in session 23, and even though they lost it to Finland, 5-4, other results in their group meant the top three standings were decided by the draw shot challenge, which Germany won.

In Group C, Russia beat Switzerland 6-4 in session 22, before losing out to China 8-0 in session 24. That initial win won them the group.

USA beat Scotland, 9-3 in session 21 this morning, before going on to win against Brazil 7-2 during session 23. These wins saw them top Group D.

Tomorrow’s action will begin with a Group A tiebreaker at 09.00 (CEST) to decide the last team that will play in the quarter-final qualification games that are due to be played at 14.00 (CEST). The tiebreaker is between Denmark and France.

So far, seven teams have been confirmed to compete in the quarter-final qualification round that will decide the remaining quarter-finalists for this new World Curling Championship.

These teams are Italy in Group A; Norway and Canada in Group B; Switzerland and China in Group C and Scotland and Hungary in Group D.

Italy won their only game of the day during session 24, against Ireland, 8-2 in six ends. Canada won their sole match, 7-4, during session 23 against Norway. This was also Norway’s only game of the day.

Switzerland lost to Russia in session 22, 6-4 but beat England in session 24, 7-6. China played twice and won twice. First they beat Poland 9-2 in session 22 and then Russia 8-0 in session 24.

Finally, Scotland lost out to USA in session 21 9-3, but went on to win their last round robin game 6-3 against Austria. Hungary lost to Estonia 7-6 during session 21, but prior to today’s games had achieved third place in Group D ensuring their place in the qualification games.

Tomorrow’s ties are as follows:

9.00 – Group A Tiebreaker: Denmark v France

14.00 – Quarter-final qualification round: Italy v Canada / Tiebreaker winner v Norway / China v Hungary / Switzerland v Scotland

20.00 – Quarter-finals: Sweden v TBC / Germany v TBC / Russia v TBC / USA v TBC (the winners of the qualification round will be drawn from a hat to decide their opponents. Teams from the same group will not play each other)
