(ATR) It's a three-city race to host the marquee athletics event.
On Tuesday, the International Association of Athletics Federations confirmed that Barcelona, Doha and Eugene, Oregon would be the three bid cities for the 2019 Athletics World Championships.
It was assumed the trio would be the only bids for several reasons, not the least of which being that they were the only ones to turn up to an IAAF seminar on bidding for the 2019 event.
The three bids will have inspections from the IAAF Evaluation Commission. The nine-member panel has three members of the IAAF Council, three IAAF staff, two representatives from Dentsu - the Japanese advertising giant that is also a sponsor of IAAF - and one from Athletics Management Services.
Barcelona is the first host of the Evaluation Commission, doing so Oct. 14 – 15, with Eugene and Doha hosting the commission on Oct. 26 – 27 and Oct. 30 – 31 respectively.
A host city will be selected by the IAAF Council during its Nov. 18 meeting in Monaco.
None of the three cities have ever hosted the IAAF World Championships, and Spain is the only of the three countries to have hosted before. The event was held in Seville in 1999.
