FITEQ Approved as Full Member of GAISF
(ATR) The Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) adds its 96th full member.
The application of the International Federation of Teqball (FITEQ) was approved by the GAISF General Assembly on Nov. 10.
Established in 2017, FITEQ already has 53 recognized national federations, well above the 40 required for full GAISF membership.
FITEQ’s approval as a World Anti-Doping Code Signatory this year completed another requirement for GAISF full membership.
In addition, the GAISF General Assembly approved the additions of the Association of Paralympic Sports Organisations (APSO) and the World Transplant Games Federation (WTGF) as Associated Members.
"GAISF is delighted to welcome FITEQ, APSO and WTGF as members of our diverse family of sports and those who support them," said GAISF President Raffaele Chiulli. "All of these organizations embody and promote the values of inclusivity and unity. They now join an invaluable support network, and GAISF looks forward to continuing to support all of these organizations in the years to come."
World Sailing was also announced as the winner of the inaugural GAISF Sustainability Award, which aims to showcase the innovative sustainability projects of International Sports Federations (IFs).
World Rugby, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) all placed within the top five.
New Dates for Final Olympic Surfing Qualifier
The 2021 Surf City El Salvador World Surfing Games will take place May 29–June 6 at two world-class locations in El Salvador: La Bocana and El Sunzal.
The International Surfing Association (ISA) says the new dates for the event, which was originally rescheduled for early May, "will ensure optimal travel conditions for all the surfers and national teams in the collective best interests of health and safety".
The 2021 edition of the World Surfing Games is the last qualifying event for Tokyo 2020. There are five remaining slots for men and seven for women to be filled. They will go to the highest ranking eligible athletes in the event.
"This will be a truly historic moment for surfing — one more major milestone on the path to Surfing’s soon-to-come Olympic debut," ISA President Fernando Aguerre said in a statement.
European Athletics Council Decisions
The 160th European Athletics Council meeting is being held virtually this week.
On Nov. 11 the council allocated the 2023 European Athletics Indoor Championships to Istanbul. It will be the first time Turkey will host a major European Athletics event although Istanbul did host the 2012 World Indoor Championships.
The venue built for the 2012 World Indoors, Atakoy Athletics Arena, will be used in 2023.
A decision for the host city for the 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships was delayed.
The day before, Rome won the right to host the 2024 European Athletics Championships, defeating a bid from Katowice-Silesia in Poland. The Stadio Olimpico, home to the annual Diamond League meeting in Rome, will be the venue.
It will be the third time Italy will host the event, following Turin for the inaugural edition in 1934 and Rome in 1974.
The three-day meeting of the European Athletics Council ends on Nov. 12.
