Sending season's greetings, the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee released the following statement:

"History will record 2016 as the year that saw the first ever Olympic and Paralympic Games hosted in South America. Tokyo 2020 would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate and thank everyone who was involved in the planning and operations of the Rio 2016 Games.

"This year, we saw impressive support from fans in Japan during the Rio 2016 Games and the Japanese Olympic team’s medal haul was a new record. An enthusiastic crowd of 800,000 turned out in downtown Tokyo to welcome home the Olympian and Paralympian medalists.

"The Olympic and Paralympic flags were handed over to Tokyo and these will be exhibited throughout the city to inspire our younger generations with the power of sport. Tokyo is increasingly gaining momentum and we will continue to boost our engagement activities next year in order to further reinforce the Olympic and Paralympic movements in Japan and overseas.

"Our preparations are on course and we are ready to continue our efforts in 2017 to deliver a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games.
