Four months from today, on Friday, August 5, NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad begins from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Mary Carillo and Jimmy Roberts will be there in prominent roles as NBC Olympics correspondents.
With 27 Olympics between them, Carillo and Roberts will chronicle the stories of the day, offer essays, and present feature stories from a wide variety of locales ranging from the rainforest to the beach, and stopping many places in between.
"With nearly three decades of Olympics experience, Mary and Jimmy are adept at getting to the heart of unknown Olympic stories that viewers look forward to over the course of our coverage," said Jim Bell, Executive Producer, NBC Olympics.
Rio marks Carillo’s 13th Olympic assignment overall and 10th for NBC. She has spent nearly three weeks traversing Brazil to film her travelogues, which have been a fundamental part of introducing the people, culture, and history of the host country and city to the U.S. television audience since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Carillo also served as a correspondent for the 2014 Sochi Olympics and was the host and interviewer for a primetime 20-year retrospective documentary on Olympic figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. She was late night host and correspondent at the 2012 London Olympics, 2010 Vancouver Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics.
A 13-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and writer, Roberts will reprise his role reporting on the stories of the Games, his 16th Olympic assignment. He has reported on "Ping Pong Diplomacy" in Beijing, Bode Miller in Vancouver, changes to Wimbledon for the Olympics in London, and hockey in Russia from Sochi. Over a career that spans more than 35 years in broadcasting and journalism, Roberts has covered major sports events including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and all of golf’s biggest events. As part of his work for NBC Sports and Golf Channel, Roberts will be a contributor for Masters.com this week.
