The LGT World Women’s Curling Championship 2021 is set to resume with the official pre-competition practice on Thursday (29 April) at 09:00 Mountain Daylight Time (MDT) after approval for the competition to continue was given by Alberta Health and the Medical Officials.
At the conclusion of a series of expanded testing, 13 of the 14 competing teams have been given medical approval to begin pre-competition practice. Team Germany — the impacted team with two positive COVID-19 cases — will not take part in the official pre-competition practice on Thursday.
The remaining teams currently isolating in the pre-competition hotel have all been cleared to enter the bubble ahead of Thursday’s official practice.
After consistent negative results in the expanded testing, and while still asymptomatic, the remaining team members of the impacted team will be given approval to return to sport at the conclusion of further testing, including testing for variants of concern.
We continue to work with public health authorities and a further determination of the remaining team members ability and timeline for the return to sport is yet to be finalised. The impact of this return to sport timeline on the competition schedule will be determined once more information is known.
The individuals who returned positive cases will remain in isolation until medically cleared by the Chief Medical Officer with guidance from Alberta Health.
The comprehensive health and safety protocols put in place for the championship have ensured the integrity of the competition bubble remained intact during this unfortunate situation and there was no risk of the impacted individuals interacting with other athletes or the local community.
The health and safety of our athletes, officials, staff and the community at large are always our primary concern. The World Curling Federation and Curling Canada have robust health and safety protocols in place under the guidance of the federal, provincial and local public health officials that will continue to be followed during this championship.
With respect for the privacy of the impacted individuals, no additional information will be shared by the World Curling Federation at this time.
