The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has established a joint lab with Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore).
Hosted by NTU's Institute of Sports Research (ISR), the new ITTF Lab@ISR will serve to provide the ITTF with services pertaining to the testing of table tennis balls and racket coverings, and to undertake such projects in future, regulating the establishment and conduct of projects related to the sport of Table Tennis.
A young and research-intensive university, NTU is ranked 39th in the world and No. 1 in Quacquarelli Symonds' Top 50 Under 50 ranking for universities established within the last 50 years. This collaboration with NTU will provide a platform for the ITTF to have access to the university's research facilities, to explore and evaluate possible new testing methods that will be of potential to both parties, and to the development of the sport.
NTU Provost Professor Freddy Boey said: "The new joint lab with ITTF aims to contribute to the progress of equipment testing through NTU's engineering research and technology expertise. Table tennis is one of the most emblematic Asia-centric sport and NTU will be able to support ITTF in engineering new testing protocols to sustain the development of the sport for fair competition."
ITTF Asia & Pacific & Marketing Director Steve Dainton shared: "We are delighted to have this joint lab collaboration with NTU. By tapping NTU's engineering research and technology expertise, we are confident that this will enable us to achieve high quality and efficiency testing of table tennis equipment. In addition, this will provide us with great opportunities to bring in the most advanced technologies to enhance our table tennis equipment testing protocol and also to look at new innovations which will help our sport to grow and develop."
ISR will provide the technical personnel, lab space, testing equipment and the technical expertise to carry out the scope of work in the joint lab.
