Every once in a while, some athletes come along who achieve the impossible and inspire generations.
These are the athletes whose names are etched in memories and in history books. University sport is no different, and the last decade alone has witnessed some incredible performances, superhuman feats and remarkably consistent success.
This June, FISU is celebrating some outstanding student athletes of the last decade. Largely based on results at the FISU World University Games – multiple editions in some cases – personal stories of courage and conviction and also subsequent achievements, five female and five male university sport athletes will be fêted. The list is in no way definitive, but rather a selection of some of the best.
Starting on Friday, 5 June, FISU will reveal the name of one incredible athlete every day. Ahead of the reveal, university sports fans will have the chance to guess the name based on hints which will be peppered on FISU’s social media channels through the day. It will be an opportunity for fans to not only test their u-sports trivia, but also get to know some of the most inspiring college athletes of the last ten years.
From a five-time world university champion in a team sport to a six-time individual gold medallist at the World University Games, the list of ten athletes includes all the major sports from athletics to swimming, football to gymnastics.
There are also a couple of outstanding winter sports stars in the mix, one of whom happens to be a multiple Olympic champion.
Get set for the revelation of ten among the best student athletes of the last decade and hear from some of them through the next fortnight on the FISU social media channels.
