China Vaults Past USA at Gymnastics Worlds

China sits atop the medal tally at the world artistic gymnastics championships for a fifth consecutive time.

Over the weekend in Tokyo, the perennial powerhouse added three gold, five silver and one bronze from individual events to bring its final total to four gold, five silver and three bronze.

USA also finished the week with four gold and three bronze but won no silvers. Russia rounded out the top three with two gold and four silver.

On the men’s side, individual all-around champion Kōhei Uchimura of Japn won floor, Krisztián Berki of Hungary the pommel horse, Chen Yibing of China the rings, Yang Hak Seon of South Korea the vault, Danell Leyva of USA the parallel bars and Zou Kai of China the horizontal bar.

In women’s action, McKayla Maroney took vault, all-around runner-up Viktoria Komova of Russia the uneven bars, Sui Lu of China the balance beam and Ksenia Afanasyeva of Russia the floor.

Italy Runs Away with Fencing Worlds

Host country Italy wraps up the fencing world championships in Catania with more than double the total medals of runner-up Russia.

Over the weekend, Italy managed only bronze in men’s team sabre, bronze in women’s team epee and silver in women’s team foil while failing to reach the podium in the other three team events.

Still, the hosts finished with four gold, three silver and four bronze against Russia’s four gold and a single bronze. China rounded out the top three with two gold and two silver.

Because points obtained in individual events were multiplied by 2.5 and in team events were doubled, the competition marked a major qualification milestone on the road to 2012 and ensures Italy is well-positioned for a strong showing at the London Olympics.

Rugby World Cup Final Set

New Zealand is one win away from ending its infamous 24-year Rugby World Cup title drought.

The hosts trounced Australia 20-6 over the weekend to set up a final against France, who edged Wales 9-8 in the other semifinal.

Australia had never before lost to New Zealand in a RWC match, but the All Blacks had a 25-year winning streak against the Wallabies at Eden Park on their side.

More history will be made Sunday with France looking for its first-ever title. New Zealand won the inaugural RWC in 1987 but has fallen short the five times since

Pentathlon Presents 2012 Calendar

Top pentathletes will travel far and wide to earn qualification points in the buildup to the London Olympics.

Charlotte, USA and Rostov, Russia join past World Cup hosts Rio de Janeiro, Budapest and Chengdu, China on the International Modern Pentathlon Union’s newly announced schedule for 2012.

Rome will host the senior world championships; Drzonkow, Poland the junior world champs and Budapest the Youth A champs.
