UCI Congress, Road Cycling WC

Dutch golden girl Marianne Vos is a fitting star of the 2012 Road Cycling World Championships.

Not only was did the Olympic and now world champion win on home soil in Limburg, Netherlands, she did so a day after the UCI’s annual Congress focused on improving the state of women’s cycling.

President Pat McQuaid called on member federations Friday to "continue their efforts in training women, not only as athletes but also as part of management, so that they can reinforce the teams of directors within federations, confederations and the UCI."

The IOC member from Ireland also cited a 53 percent increase in elite women riders over the past decade and a 68 percent hike in elite women’s teams.

The weekend’s other winners were Philippe Gilbert of Beligum in the men’s road race, Tony Martin of Germany in the men’s time trial and Judith Arndt of Germany in the women’s time trial.

FIBA 3x3 Grand Final

San Juan, Puerto Rico is FIBA’s first-ever 3x3 World Tour winner.

William Orozco, Jonathan Garcia, Jose Lopez and Andy Ortiz edged Split, Croatia in Friday’s final 20-16 to leave Miami Beach, Florida with both bragging rights and a $30,000 check.

Rafal Lipinski of Poland won $2,000 in the Nike shootout, and Angel Santana of Romania took home a camera after winning the Samsung shootout.

The tournament was FIBA’s sixth and final stop on its inaugural 3x3 World Tour, which also stopped in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Vladivostok, Russia; New York City; Istanbul; and Madrid over the past three months.

IIHF Congress

Around the Rings will be on the scene in Tokyo as the International Ice Hockey Federation’s General Congress comes to Asia for the first time.

Elections top the week's agenda, though neither the presidential race nor those of the four continental vice presidents feature more than a single candidate.
