FIBA's Executive Committee on Wednesday met for the second time in 2017 at the House of Basketball.
Here are the main takeaways from the meeting.
3x3 becomes part of Olympic Games
The Executive Committee expressed its great pleasure following the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s decision on June 9 to have 3x3, FIBA's urban discipline, become a part of the Olympic basketball program, starting at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
It praised FIBA's 3x3 Department for all of the hard work and dedication that has gone toward achieving this historic milestone.
In light of this decision, it indicated its desire for all of FIBA’s National Federations to look into organizing and playing in more 3x3 endorsed tournaments, with a view to integrate a high number of players dedicated to the discipline.
Update on FIBA's New Competition System
The Executive Committee was informed that more workshops have been organized for National Federations ahead of the launch of the New Competition System in November. A total of 10 webinars on marketing and communications aspects of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers have been successfully held since March. It was confirmed that an Observers’ Program for National Federations Games Directors will be carried out during the Continental Cups. Finally, it was announced that a total of 169 venues meeting the standards/requirements to hold official games under the new system had been registered to date.
Mid-Term Congress
The Executive Committee received an update on the successful staging of the first-ever FIBA Mid-Term Congress in Hong Kong on May 3-4. Delegates from 146 National Federations were present for the two-day event, during which time they also took part in workshops covering the following themes: 'Maximizing opportunities of the FIBA Qualifiers', 'Building the standard development pathway', 'Basketball & media in the digital age' and 'Everybody can be successful with 3x3'.
National Federations
The Executive Committee lifted, under a set of agreed upon conditions, the suspension on the Brazil Basketball Confederation (CBB) and warned the Mexican Basketball Association (ADEMEBA) that it could face sanctions if it does not meet certain statutory requirements.
Following the conclusion of the meeting, the members of the Executive Committee traveled to the French city of Nantes where they attended the Finals of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2017.
