The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has suspended the Sri Lankan Badminton Association’s (SLBA) membership with immediate effect.
This follows progressive correspondence between the world-governing body and the SLBA over the past 18 months pertaining to the SLBA’s governance; the review of the SLBA Constitution and the independence and autonomy of the SLBA.
BWF has determined the SLBA Constitution does not meet the criteria for ongoing membership of the BWF under Clause 8.3 and 8.10 of the BWF Constitution. Additionally, BWF has determined the autonomy of the SLBA is being compromised through the application of government sports regulations and sports laws and this is contrary to the requirements under Clause 5.2 and 5.3 of the BWF Constitution (see link to the BWF Constitution).
In accordance with Clause 13.10 of the BWF Constitution, a suspended BWF member association may not:
1. Enter players into any BWF sanctioned tournament
2. Receive sanctioning for any international badminton tournament or event
3. Attend BWF General Meetings (save for the purposes of Clause 13.8)
This suspension will remain in place until the SLBA complies with BWF governance principles.
