In yet another action that aims to guarantee a safe and healthy environment for sports practice in Brazil and that seeks to offer as much information as possible to all agents of national sports, especially athletes, to base their actions on returning to activities, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) released on this Friday, the 12th, the Guide for the Practice of Olympic Sports in the COVID-19 Scenario. The document was elaborated following the determinations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and observing examples and successful parameters adopted by international sports entities to the present moment.
"The BOC prioritizes the safety, health and physical integrity of everyone involved in high-performance sports practice in the country and has thus been working in partnership with the confederations, athletes and their surroundings. Promoting compliance with the guidelines of health authorities, their rules and government decrees, the BOC hopes that this guide will also serve as a basis for consultation for other sports institutions", said BOC's President, Paulo Wanderley. "We are working so that the return to sports activities is gradual, progressive and with appropriate rules and procedures aimed at the safety of all users", he added.
Drafted by a multidisciplinary staff of doctors, coaches and consultants, the Guide for the Practice of Olympic Sports in the COVID-19 Scenario is divided into 15 volumes. Its content thoroughly details the gradual resumption of activities at the Brazil Team Training Center, in Rio de Janeiro.
Administered by the BOC since 2008, the Brazil Team Training Center receives about 200 athletes per month. The athletes' return is expected to happen through five different stages, starting with a small group and gradually normalizing. All athletes and other professionals who enter the Training Center will weekly undergo the most rigorous diagnostic procedures to verify their immune response.
"The utilization of the Brazil Team Training Center will be adequate to the norms of social and professional interaction, determined through the technical guidelines of public health agencies. By managing the risks, identifying what are their major incidences, proposing control strategies and validating these with the health agencies, we have the possibility to return to sports practice more quickly", noted BOC's Sports Director, Jorge Bichara. "There is no set date for the reopening of the Training Center. We have to wait for the clearance from public health agencies and assess the impacts", added Bichara.
The Guide for the Practice of Olympic Sports in the COVID-19 Scenario also presents a series of guidelines common to all segments of sports, safety standards, medical studies regarding the impacts on the sports environment, in addition to specific protocols for 40 Olympic modalities.
