The next generation of world class floorball players is coming to Denmark in 2023 to duke it out over the highest international honor: The world championships. After an intense competition between many highly qualified bids, the International Floorball Federation (IFF) has decided that the U19 Men’s World Championships in 2023 will be held in Frederikshavn, Denmark.
Every journey, no matter the destination, must begin somewhere. For Floorball Denmark, the national federation for floorball in Denmark, the journey began with hosting the Men’s World Cup qualifiers in 2020. The destination: Becoming a serious contender and international force for furthering floorball around the world.
Now the second leg of the journey begins where the first leg left off. Just this week, the International Floorball Federation (IFF) selected Denmark as the host country for the U19 Men’s World Championships in 2023, which will therefore be held in Frederikshavn, Denmark from April 26 to April 30, 2023.
- It is impossible to overstate our excitement, says the secretary general of Floorball Denmark, Carsten Nymand Provstgaard.
- The IFF is putting a lot of trust in our organization by awarding our hosting bid, and that is something we should be proud of and work hard to live up to. We are incredibly excited to build a world-class championship in Arena Nord with solid backing from our partners in the Municipality of Frederikshavn, Sport Event Denmark, SPORTLIVE and Arena Nord itself.
Not Frederikshavn’s first rodeo
The historic and industrious city of Frederikshavn is no stranger to international sporting events. In 2015, the European Handball Federation (EHF) Women’s Handball World Championships were held in the city and in 2020, the Men’s World Floorball Championship qualification round attracted more than 4,000 spectators to Frederikshavn.
The national sporting event organization, Sport Event Denmark, is equally ecstatic to see a new international event coming to Denmark:
- An international youth championship can often pave the way for one or more senior championships down the line. Therefore, it is great that the 2023 U19 Men’s World Floorball Championship has been awarded to Frederikshavn. We all share - in this prolonged time of uncertainty and lockdowns - a need to rejoice and look forward to international events and championships – and even more so when they happen on our own soil, says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.
16 national teams from around the world, including Denmark, will send their best and brightest, their star attackers and invincible goalies, their unrelenting fans and incredible crews and coaches to Frederikshavn in 2023, to compete for the biggest achievement and highest honor in international floorball: The World Floorball Championship Trophy – and, of course, the bragging rights that accompany it.
More information will be released via the IFF’s newsletters, Floorball Denmark, Sport Event Denmark, Arena Nord and the city of Frederikshavn as we get closer to the event. All of the matches played by Denmark’s national team will be broadcast live on SPORTLIVE, one of Floorball Denmark’s partners in organizing and hosting this goliath of an event.
