The 2019 Sports Festival, powered by GAISF, returns for its second edition next week as part of the wider SportAccord programme.
The theme of this year’s Festival is "United Through Youth", and delegates from all over the world have been invited to celebrate the young people of Australia.
The Opening ceremony will be attended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Dr. Thomas Bach, the 8th United Nations General Secretary, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, GAISF Leader Raffaele Chiulli and a number of outstanding ambassadors from the wider sports movement.
GAISF has worked closely with the Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport, the Queensland Government and the United Through Sports initiative to create a unique and diverse programme which reflects the culture of Australia.
Taking place at the famous Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach, the Sports Festival is just five minutes’ walk from the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre where SportAccord 2019 will take place. GAISF Members have been integral to the Sports Festival, with over 90 International Federations showcasing their sport and giving local children the opportunity to try new activities.
The festival spans 11 different zones, including the beach, the tatami, the ring and the urban zones. Over 250 Australians from local schools and youth clubs have been invited to try out the sports, with special demonstrations and interactive presentations happening throughout the day.
The Sports Festival was launched at last year’s SportAccord in Bangkok, Thailand, raising awareness and funds for the Rohingya refugee camp. More than 100 children participated in the opening ceremony, and performances included songs from a displaced children’s choir, cheerleading and gymnastics squads and a traditional Muay Boran presentation.
Organisers are hoping for similar success this year and believe that the Sports Festival offers a tangible legacy for the local residents.
"Each and every International Federation is committed to promoting their sport and inspiring young people to become the next generation of athletes," GAISF Leader Raffaele Chiulli said.
"Through the Sports Festival, we can reach new audiences and bring hope to underprivileged communities. This is an important role for all sports leaders. I want to thank Stephan Fox, AIMS and all the International Federations participating for helping to make the 2019 Sports Festival a success."
The Sports Festival, powered by GAISF and under the patronage of the IOC, will take place from 7-10 May at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach.
