(ATR) HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Jordan is the new president of the International Equestrian Federation, winning today's election in Kuala Lumpur.
Al Hussein received 82 votes in the second round of voting. She defeated HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Freddy Serpieri of Greece. It was the first contested election in the 85-year history of the FEI.
"I promise to do everything in my power and to work tirelessly to serve the institution and the people who have done me the honour of placing their trust and belief in me," said Al Hussein after her victory.
One of the first challenges for Al Hussein in her new role will be overseeing the complicated preparations for Beijing Olympics. The equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong, three hours by plane from Beijing.
