(ATR) The 2006 FIVB World Championships begin on Oct. 31 as 24 men's teams and 24 women's teams compete for top honors in Japan.

Italy, the defending women's champions, will compete against 23 others starting Tuesday afternoon. Opening round competitions will be held in Kobe, Nagoya, Sapporo and Tokyo.

Brazil is a heavy favorite in the women's competition after its Grand Champions Cup victory in Japan a year ago and its fourth-straight World Grand Prix title in Reggio Calabria in September.

Cameroon, Costa Rica and Kazakhstan are making their first appearances in the tournament.

Women's competition is scheduled to continue through Nov. 16 at the finals in Osaka.

The start of the men's competition follows the crowning of the women's champions on Nov. 17 and is scheduled to conclude on Dec.3.

Ticket agent Ticket Pia reports that three of the five first-round matches in Tokyo have sold out.

Tokyo Broadcast Systems is the official host broadcaster.

The first men's World Volleyball Championship was held in Prague in 1949 and the first women's in Moscow in 1952. Some 218 countries and regions have equal opportunity to compete in the event. After eight months of qualifying, the top 24 teams in the men's and women's division compete in the final rounds.
