The U.S. Classic traveled from Douglas’s premature abandonment to a new relentless victory for Biles

In a historic edition, the Olympic champion in Rio won the All Around in her season premiere; Sunisa Lee did not appear in parallel bars and excelled in girders; in the June trials they will seek to seal their Olympic place.

In a contest that stood out for being the first to bring together the last three Olympic champions in All Around, the 2024 U.S. Classic found Simone Biles the most outstanding gymnast for the sixth time. The seven-time medalist at the Games opened her 2024 winning the All Around with a score of 59,500, followed by Shilese Jones (57,650) and Jordan Chiles (55,450).

Gabby Douglas performed the opposite in her second appearance since Rio 2016. After arriving late as a result of repeated flight delays due to thunderstorms, resulting in two hours of rest, the winner in London 2012 suffered two falls on the parallel bars (as in the American Classic) and decided to withdraw from the competition after scoring 10,100 on her first device.

The 40,700 points scored by Sunisa Lee (37th) are largely explained by her absence from parallel bars, one of the specialties of the winner in Tokyo 2020. The 14,600 in girder (the best record in the tournament) position her with clear possibilities of joining the Olympic team.

The elite senior session of the 40th edition of the traditional annual event, held at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, did not award Olympic seats: the five gymnasts who will compete in Paris 2024 will be decided in the Olympic team events (trials) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, between June 27 and 30. The three gold medalists will go for the ticket.
