The Spanish gymnast María Herranz died “suddenly” at the age of 17 from “terrible meningitis” in the early morning of this Thursday, according to the City Council of Cabanillas del Campo, the municipality where the athlete lived, in a statement.
Herranz was part of the Spanish trampoline gymnastics team and had participated in the last World Championship of the discipline, held in Birmingham in November last year, in the synchronized trampoline test with Carmen Hernandez. In addition, María was a student at the ‘Elena de la Cruz’ Art School and was part of the Ruditramp club in Cabanillas del Campo.
The Royal Spanish Gymnastics Federation (RFEG) “deeply” regretted Herranz’s death: “Our deepest condolences to family and friends. Spanish gymnastics will always remember you,” he said in a message on social networks, where the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sport, Pilar Alegría, also spoke out. “A big hug to María Herranz’s family, friends and colleagues,” said the head of Sport, a few words also shared by the Higher Sports Council (CSD).
The City Council noted that he died “suddenly — in just 24 hours — due to terrible meningitis”.
