At the Basketball House in Mies (Switzerland), headquarters of FIBA, the group draw was held for the men’s and women’s tournaments of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Among men, the United States, champion of the last four editions (Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020), will be in Group C alongside Serbia, South Sudan and the winner of the Puerto Rico Olympic Qualifying Championship. The Americans won seven of the last eight Olympic Games and precisely one of the biggest absentees in Paris will be Argentina, which was the only one that could break with that supremacy in Athens.
France, host and finalist in Tokyo, will be in Group B alongside Germany, Japan and the first place finisher in the Latvian Olympic Qualifying Championship; while Australia, bronze in Japan, will share Group A with Canada and the winners of the Pre-Olympics in Athens and Valencia.
The draw was based on the world ranking and had to meet certain conditions: in each of the three groups there had to be a minimum of two European teams and a maximum of three, while from the rest of the continents there could be no more than one representative in each group.
On the women’s side, the dominance of the United States in the Olympic Games is even greater because it won the gold medal since Los Angeles 1984, except in Barcelona 1992 when the title went to the Unified Team.
The Americans will make up Group C along with Germany, Japan and Belgium; in Group A there will be Serbia, Spain, China and Puerto Rico and Group B will have Canada, Nigeria, Australia and France.
In the women’s draw, there were also a couple of requirements for the formation of the groups: a minimum of one and a maximum of two European teams and no more than one from Africa, America, Asia and Oceania in each area.

The qualifiers will take place at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium in Lille and the finals at the Bercy Arena: the men’s tournament will begin on July 27 and the champion will be announced on August 10, while the women’s tournament will be played starting on July 29 and the gold medal will be defined on August 11.
The format is the same for both competitions: the first two from each group will go to the quarterfinals and the two best third will complete the eight selected that will seek the title in Paris 2024.
