Trampoline gymnastics was incorporated into the Olympic program in Sydney 2000 and since then its growth has not stopped. In the 37th World Specialty Championships starting today in Birmingham, 350 gymnasts from 41 countries will participate for the international crown and the qualification to Paris 2024.
Although only a single trampoline is included at the Olympic level, the World Cup brings together all the disciplines of trampoline gymnastics: synchronized trampoline, double mini-Trump (DMT) and tumbling.
In total, 15 world titles will be awarded this year, while four to eight gymnasts per gender, depending on the results, will qualify for the Olympic Games. In Paris 2024, only 16 men and 16 women will participate, and the remaining places will be allocated in 2024 World Cups and Continental Championships.
All of the 2022 world champions, both on individual and synchronized trampolines, will be in Birmingham to defend their titles. Among the prominent names, Olympic champion Zhu Xueying appears, who will have a close title match against Japan’s Mori Hikaru and British Bryony Page.
Other reigning world champions confirmed to compete include Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Dylan Schmidt, who will face a strong Chinese team, led by 2021 world champion Yan Langyu and rising stars He Longyu, Wang Zisai and Li Yuming. After having won all the individual world trampoline titles from 2006 to 2021, the Chinese will seek to snatch the title from the talented New Zealander who broke 15 years of dominance of the Asian giant.
Gymnasts from the United States, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina will have a great challenge on their hands, as the World Cup takes place less than a week after the end of the competition at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
In addition to the large single trampoline figure Page, Great Britain shines especially with the Tumbling, where its men’s and women’s teams were the best last year. Kristof Willerton, Jaydon Paddock, Shanice Davidson and Megan Kealy will return and hope to increase their collections in the face of what promises to be a very welcoming local audience.
