Brittney Griner, a key member of the USA Women’s Basketball Team that won Olympic gold in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, is set to make her first appearance for USA Basketball this year.
Griner, 33, was detained in a Russian prison for 10 months from February to December 2022. She was found guilty of carrying vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. She was originally sentenced to nine years in prison. The standard sentence for possession of less than two grams of hash oil is 15 days.
The U.S. Women’s Basketball Team will play in Knoxville, Tenn. on November 5 against the University of Tennessee Lady Vols. They will also play against Duke University of November 12. In between those games, the team will hold a training camp in Atlanta November 7-9.
Griner rejoined the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury upon her release from Russia. She averaged 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 31 games. The Mercury missed the postseason for the first time since 2012.
The nine-time WNBA All-Star said in April she would be interested in playing in Paris next year.
“I’m never going overseas to play again unless I’m representing my country at the Olympics,” she told The Athletic. “If I make that team, that would be the only reason I would leave U.S. soil.”
The U.S. has won the last eight Olympic gold medals in women’s basketball and would be a heavy favorite to make it nine straight in Paris.
