The action in athletics began with the debut of the mixed relay marathon that established the Ecuadorian duo of Brian Daniel Pintado and Glenda Morejón as champions, winning the second gold medal for their country. Jean-Simon Desgagnés from Canada and Belén Casetta from Argentina were the champions of the 3000 meters with obstacles. For his part, Curtis Thompson won the gold medal in javelin throwing and Cuba and Brazil won the women’s and men’s 4x400 meters relay respectively.
