Day 15 Santiago 2023: Closure of athletics, new places for Paris and a historic day for Argentina

Athletics closed its participation at the Pan American Games and awarded medals in eleven events. The Argentine delegation had its best day in the competition, winning nine gold medals. The Chilean capital is preparing for its last day with the definition of nine sports.

The action in athletics began with the debut of the mixed relay marathon that established the Ecuadorian duo of Brian Daniel Pintado and Glenda Morejón as champions, winning the second gold medal for their country. Matthew Ludwig, from the United States, was crowned pole vaulting champion with a mark of 5.55 meters. Canadian Ethan Katzberg, world champion in Budapest 2023, won the gold medal with a Pan-American record in hammer throwing. Sahily Diago won the women’s 800 meters while José Maita did his thing in the men’s race. The North American Rachel Mccoy won the Pan American title in high jump with a mark of 1.87 meters.

Jean-Simon Desgagnés from Canada and Belén Casetta from Argentina were the champions of the 3000 meters with obstacles. For his part, Curtis Thompson won the gold medal in javelin throwing and Cuba and Brazil won the women’s and men’s 4x400 meters relay respectively.

In soccer, Brazil beat Chile 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the men’s final and became Pan-American champion for the fifth time in its history, while Mexico thrashed the United States 4-1 for the bronze medal. The North American softball team far outscored Puerto Rico 7-0 to win the gold medal. For the same result, the Canadians won bronze against Mexico. The United States also achieved great victories in water polo, becoming champion for both women and men.

Saturday was also a special day for Argentina. After the title won by the men’s hockey team last Friday, Las Leonas won the final, beating the United States 2-1. Also with the gold medal and the ticket to Paris 2024, Los Gladiadores, the men’s handball team, beat Brazil 32-25, while the rugby 7 team showed their dominance and had no problem securing themselves against Chile by winning 24-5 and basketball overtaking Venezuela 79-65. The only defeat was in men’s volleyball, which they lost 3-2 to Brazil.

Canoe sprint and sailing also brought great victories to Argentina. In the first case, Agustín Vernice won gold in the K1 1000 and in the K4 500 with Gonzalo Carreras, Manuel Lascano and Gonzalo Lo Moro. In the case of sailing, Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco were enshrined in Nacra 17. Julio Alsogaray and Malena Sciarra were also champions in the Snipe class. On the other hand, Belén Casetta made history in athletics by winning the gold medal in the 3000 meters with obstacles, setting a Pan-American record.

The United States continues to dominate the medal table with 272 medals in total, while Brazil has already reached 200 and Mexico is third in terms of gold medals won over Canada. On the last day of competition, titles will be defined in archery, ball, BMX Freestyle, Bowling, Golf, Karate, Speed Skating, Squash and table tennis.
