Santiago 2023 is coming to an end with the start of the last two days of competition, but there was a lot of Pan-American action in several sports last Friday. At the close of the day, the Argentine men’s hockey team, Olympic champion in Rio 2016, won the gold medal by beating Chile 3-1. Los Leones repeated the title won in Lima 2019 and Toronto 2015 and also added their ticket to the next Olympic Games. Of the 15 times they competed in the Pan American Games, the first being Winnipeg 1967, they played all the finals of the event, winning the title 11 times and being a silver medal in the remaining four.
It was also historic for the Mexican women’s football team, which in this case, also beating Chile in the final, won their first Pan-American title. In previous editions, they won the bronze medal three times and where fourth one time. The definition of mens event will take place today between Brazil and Chile, while the United States and Mexico will play for bronze.

On the other hand, the men’s 10,000 meters were left in the hands of the American Isai Rodriguez, Flor Ruiz from Colombia won the final javelin throwing, Lázaro Martínez from Cuba became champion of the triple jump and the Venezuelan Joselyn Brea gave her country the fifth gold medal, and the second for her in these Games, by winning the 1500 meter final.
The United States dominated the artistic swimming event in groups with a margin of more than 8 points over Mexico and won its 101 gold medal. Canada completed the podium of the women’s event. The finalists of men’s basketball were also defined after Argentina’s 108-73 victory against Mexico and Venezuela’s 84-77 hit against Brazil. Argentina will also play in the men’s handball final against Brazil for the gold medal and the ticket to Paris. The two countries will also face each other in the men’s volleyball final.
Brazil dominated the day of rhythmic gymnastics, by winning both gold and silver in the ball and hoop series with María Eduarda Alexandre and Bárbara Domingos and the gold medal for the team, adding Mexico and the United States to the podium.
With these results, Brazil is able to comfortably consolidate itself in second place in the medal table with 166 medals in total, 51 more medals than Mexico, which is in third place and 71 fewer medals than the United States, which leads the ranking with 101 gold medals, 61 silver medals and 75 bronze medals.
