The Dominican Marileidy Paulino, one of the great figures in athletics at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, won her second gold medal by winning the 200-meter race and, later, she closed her participation with a bronze in the 4x100 relay.
Paulino, the recent world champion in the 400 in Budapest, won with a time of 22.74 and left behind the winner of the 100 meters, the Cuban Yunisleidy García (23.33), and the Brazilian Ana Carolina De Jesús (23.52). The Dominican, who had already won the gold medal in the mixed 4x400 relay, finished her Games with a third place in the 4x100 relay won by Cuba and silver for Chile.
Athletics also defined its Pan American champions in women’s pole vault (the American Briget Williams), women’s shot put (Canada’s Sarah Mitton), men’s triple jump (Cuba’s Leyanis Pérez), 200 meters men’s (Brazil’s Renan Correa), 1500 meters men’s (Canadian Charles Philibert-Thiboutot) and 5000 meters for women (Venezuela’s Joselyn Brea). The United States disappointed in the 4x100 relays: seventh in women and disqualified in men (Brazil won).
Another highlight of the day was the consecration of Mexican women Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jiménez in Artistic Swimming, a title that allowed them to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024. The United States and Brazil completed the podium at the Aquatic Center.
In addition, the Brazilian Barbara Domingos won the gold medal in the individual event of Rhythmic Gymnastics and Brazil won team gold as well, but since the South American country was not competing for a place for Paris, the American Evita Griskenas and Mexico qualified for the Olympic Games in teams.
Brazil also won the men’s triathlon by Miguel Hidalgo, while among the women the Pan-American champion was the Mexican Lizeth Rueda. In addition, the United States won by teams in women’s foil (Olympic champion Lee Kiefer won her second gold medal) and men’s sword.
The United States leads the medal table with 207 (90 gold, 55 silver and 62 bronze) and Brazil is consolidated in second place ahead of Canada, Mexico and Cuba.
