The Julio Martínez Prádanos National Stadium witnessed the beginning of the track and field events of one of the most outstanding sports in the Olympic universe. In athletics, the podiums were defined, with the sum of points for Paris, for women’s disc throw, with the victory of Isabela Rodrigues from Brazil, who also won the silver medal with Andressa Oliveira. The Peruvian Lucca Messinas, gold in open surf at Lima 2019, won the gold medal and got his ticket to Paris on shortboard. Tatiana Weston from Brazil was the winner of the women’s category. Peru also shone on the longboard with Benoit Clemente and María Fernanda Reyes, both champions in that category. North American Zane Schweitzer won gold in SUP as did Isabella Gomez Brady, from Colombia, in the women ‘s category.
As the women’s competition came to an end, the group stages of men’s volleyball and handball began. The bronze medalists at Tokyo 2020, the Argentine volleyball team, had a great start in Santiago, beating Puerto Rico 3-0. Brazil had no problems and sealed a 3-0 victory against Colombia, while Cuba did have to fight a little harder against Mexico in its 3-2 victory. For its part, Chile also achieved a victory in its debut, beating the Dominican Republic 3-1.
In handball, Uruguay won a great victory against Cuba for 25-24, Argentina beat the United States 28-12 and Brazil thrashed Mexico 51-19. The local team also won 30-21 in their debut against the Dominican Republic. On the other hand, water polo saw its first minutes of action in both the men’s and women’s categories. Perhaps one of the outstanding matches was Argentina versus Cuba in the men’s match. Los Yacarés beat the Cubans for the third time in their history with a resounding 20-4 result. The United States, Canada and Brazil had no problems and won their respective games in both men’s and women’s.
At the end of the day, the United States comfortably leads the medal table with 171 total medals, 72 gold, 45 silver and 54 bronze medals. For its part, Brazil has a total of 123, Canada 105 and Mexico 89. Colombia completes the Top 5 with 48 medals. Of the 41 countries participating in these Games, 25 have already won at least one medal.
