Day 9 Santiago 2023: handball and a new qualifier for Paris, Kimberly García added a new title and parity in judo

Brazil won the women’s competition and the only Olympic ticket. The Peruvian, world champion, won her first Pan American gold medal in a race walk that had a gross error. Two Cuban judokas and two Brazilians shared the glory. United States, firm in open water and in the medal table.

The ninth day of competitions became the second with the presence of athletics in Santiago 2023. The race walk experienced an unusual and scandalous start: in the women’s event, which saw the two-time world champion Kimberly García, from Peru, celebrate for the first time at the Pan American level, 17 kilometers were run and not the official 20. The error in the route was warned and corrected, David Hurtado repeated the title for Ecuador and won the 20 km.

The women’s Olympic handball competition has a new member: Brazil sealed its ticket to Paris by beating Argentina in the final in Viña del Mar. The champions of the individual tennis tournaments were Laura Pigossi and Facundo Díaz Acosta, while Brazil won the women’s basketball tournament. Argentina won bronze and the first Pan-American medal in its history in the discipline.

Before the eyes of Chilean President Gabriel Boric, judo once again saw Brazil at the top, this time in conjunction with Cuba. The two women’s categories were left in the hands of island judokas (Maylin Del Toro in -63 kg and Idelannis Gómez Feria in -70 kg.) and in the men’s categories the South Americans won (Gabriel Falcão Lira by W.O. in -73 kg and Guilherme César Schmidt in -81 kg).

In men’s hockey, the semifinal crosses were defined. Argentina, which crushed Peru 22-0 in its last group match, will face the United States and Canada will face Chile. The champion will qualify for Paris 2024.

In open waters, the full dominance of the United States was a reflection of the medal table that leads loosely above Mexico and Canada. Ashley Twichell won the women’s 10 km race and left Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha, Olympic champion in Tokyo, in second place; Brennan Gravley took over the men’s race in a hard-fought finish against Argentinian Ivo Cassini and Mexico’s Paulo Strehlke.
