Day 6 Santiago 2023: Longoria magnified the legend, boxing defined the places for Paris and confirmation for Barranquilla 2027

The Mexican won her eleventh gold medal in racquetball and was one short of equaling the record of Canadian Denise Parker. The boxing semi finals provided the last spots for the Olympic Games, while the Colombian city was ratified to host the next Pan American Games.

The fifth day of Santiago 2023 had only gold medals in track cycling, modern pentathlon, sports shooting, volleyball and racquetball, a sport that once again saw the dedication of one of the legends of the Pan American Games, the Mexican Paola Longoria.

At the close of racquetball, Mexico won the team final against Argentina and Longoria, who only played singles in these Games, won her eleventh Pan-American title to win one of Canadian archery titles, who is the woman with the most gold in the history of the Games.

“I don’t know if I’m going back to single mode, it’s a lot of wear and tear, but maybe in doubles it is. It’s something I would love, to go with another medal. I’m not closing the door, but it’s not a yes either,” said the racquetball legend, who played his first Pan-American Championship in Toronto 2015, about his future.

If the Mexican’s intention is to reach the record for medals, it will be in Barranquilla, which today was confirmed as the venue for the Pan American Games in 2027. At a press conference, the president of Panam Sports, Chilean Neven Ilic, said: “The truth is that we are very happy, Colombia is Colombia, for us it is a tremendously important country in the development of sports.”

The question about Barranquilla 2027 began after a letter sent in August by Ilic himself to the mayor and president of the Colombian Olympic Committee, Ciro Solano, in which he asked them to fulfill the organizational contract or, otherwise, they would be transferred to another country. Finally, doubts were cleared and in four years Colombia will host the Pan American Games for the second time after Cali 1971.

The main protagonist of the 6th day of Santiago 2023 was boxing, which ended up defining the places in Paris (it gave a total of 30) and went to Brazilians Tatiana de Jesús Chagas, Keno Machado, Caroline Barbosa de Almeida, Michael Da Silva, Wamderley De Souza and Abner Teixeira; the mexicans Citlalli Ortiz, Marco Verde Alvarez and Miguel Angel Martínez Ramírez; americans Jahmal Harvey, Jennifer Lozano, Morelle McCane and Joshua Edwards; cubans Saidel Horta, Julio César La Cruz Peraza and Arlen López Cardona; the colombian Johana Gómez Landaeta, Atheyna Bylon from Panamá, José Rodríguez Tenorio from Ecuador, the dominican Yunior Alcantara Reyes and canadian Wyatt Sanford.

After a day that saw the start of women’s hockey (comfortable victories for Argentina, the United States, Canada and Chile), the United States leads the medal table at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games with 139 medals (59 gold medals), while Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Colombia complete the top five in the table.
