Cameroon? France? The United States?
Those were the options available for the current NBA MVP regarding who he will represent in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
He finally made up his mind, and let’s just say the home country wasn’t thrilled with the decision.
Embiid told USA Basketball Managing Director Grant Hill he has picked the U.S., according to reports.
“My son is American,” he told reports. “I’ve been here for such a long time. I feel like for the past few years every decision has been mainly based on family. That’s what it came down to.”
The home country was hoping to feature Embiid along with top overall draft pick Victor Wembanyama as they chase their first basketball gold medal. French President Emmanuel Macron even got involved, appealing to Embiid to represent France in a phone call, according to the Wall Street Journal.
President Macron no doubt took the snub much harder than Embiid’s potential teammate and fellow NBAer did.
“I’m not disappointed,” Wembanyama told reporters. “If I have the opportunity, if I am selected, I will fight with other French people to win a title. Gold is the only goal.”
“I didn’t really have an opinion. I’m just sad for Cameroon.”
Ah yes, Cameroon.
Embiid was born in the African country, but he’s never played in any major international tournament for them.
If he did select Cameroon (which never seemed even a remote possibility), he likely would’ve had to go through a time-consuming process with FIBA to switch countries. He already went through the process to become eligible to play for France and the U.S.
Embiid didn’t play in this summer’s FIBA World Cup, nor did many of the top NBA players. The U.S. lost to eventual champion Germany in the semifinals, while France crashed out in group play.
